Hello.
I installed a Golf 7 steering wheel in my Golf 5 (Comfortline / model year 2008).
The vehicle originally came with a 3-spoke leather steering wheel without a horn button. The steering column control unit was a mid-range model with a Type 2 slip ring.
Cruise control and Multi-Function Display (MFA). (Cruise control and MFA are available.)
The factory condition:

Now, regarding the problem...
I've definitely ordered a 1K0 953 549 CH steering column control unit (the all-in-one) and I was hoping that would make the steering wheel work.
I also had to swap the lever for the GRA from Index F to Index G.

Beim Golf 5 geht der Lnnkrad Lin-Bus ins Lenksäulensteuergerät. Beide haveLin 2.0
I purchased the following parts from

(which is legal in !!!Austria!!!):
5G0 419 091 is the part number for the steering wheel.
5G0 880 201 is the corresponding airbag part number.
5G0 971 584 cable harness.
... although the fun cost a little over €1200 - but otherwise, there's nothing else in life

.
Then I conducted a small generational comparison.

As you can see, G5-G7 are not that different from each other, at least in terms of their electrical characteristics.
The remaining gray wire from pin 5 of the Mute buttons on the steering wheel turned out to be the GRA (Gray Reallocation) ON/OFF signal, and it switches from 12V to 0.7V when pressed.
In addition, my table (floor

) assembly...

In the VCDS diagnostic data blocks 009-1, I was able to see that all buttons are working except for the one for the cruise control on the steering wheel

.
Only... it couldn't have been that simple... and it wasn't like that either...
After some experimentation, the Mufu buttons on the radio triggered some reactions.
Using the "MFA - Next/Previous Page" buttons caused the radio to switch stations, while pressing the "OK" button lowered the volume.
The problem with the whole thing is that when switching to the modular cross-beam module in the LIN bus to the steering wheel, the IDs were changed. Technically, the parts work together, but the protocol doesn't match. This means, for example, that the "volume down" button has ID 14 in the G5/G6, but in the G7 steering wheel, it has ID 9, and ID 14 is used by the "OK" button. As a result, the steering column control unit cannot assign the pressed button correctly. And what happens, as in my case, is that pressing the "OK" button results in the volume being reduced, or pressing the "scroll" button for the MFA results in a change of sender, etc.
A comparison with a G6 Mufu...

How can this be true?
For those who are interested... regarding the Golf 7 Mufu control unit with the GRA (presumably referring to a specific feature or component):

Pinout (starting from the bottom):
1. Mass.
2. Terminal 30 (+).
3. LIN bus (LIN 2.0)
4. Unverified... possibly similar to the horn input on model G6.
5. GRA ON/OFF
And just to be sure, let's try installing everything and see how it works.

Since I was going to have to buy it anyway, I also bought a Golf 6 steering wheel.
Now, all functions should work. I've only tested it with the standard radio so far, but it has been verified with VCDS.

Okay... However, I want all functions, including GRA, to work on the G7 steering wheel. To achieve this, I need to control the GRA lever using a microcontroller with bilateral switches, in parallel with the buttons.
Okay, now let's talk about how to get the data from the steering wheel into the steering column control unit or the vehicle's electronics.
- Intercept G7 Mufu signals (LIN bus) directly at the steering column control unit and use a microcontroller to control the G6 buttons. GRA is controlled via two microcontrollers over a LIN bus, using a free line at the slip ring.
- Install the G6 keys into the G7 steering wheel and close the keys in parallel. The GRA (Ground Reality Augmentation) is connected via two microcontrollers over a LIN bus, using a free line on the slip ring.
- Monitor all G7 buttons with a microcontroller and reproduce G6 LIN bus messages. The GRA (Gear Range Actuator) then requires its own microcontroller to control the GRA lever.
- Using a microcontroller to monitor all G7 buttons and control the G6 multi-function buttons located in the steering column. The GRA (Graphics and Rider Assistance) then requires its own microcontroller to control the GRA lever.
- Something completely different...
Yes... that's about it for now

. I am very open to suggestions/solution proposals
