Wiring Questions: Get Answers Now!

Hi,
Okay, here's a fundamental question about wiring:
The CAN bus has a bus-like structure, not a star-like one, right? This means that for example, in the engine CAN, the two twisted pairs of wires run from the ABS control unit to the engine control unit and then to the instrument cluster. Does this mean that one of the three control units must have four CAN cables connected to it?
I have a Golf IV MJ98, so one without CAN bus. The KI (instrument cluster) definitely doesn't have it (I checked). However, according to the wiring diagrams, it should be present on the engine control unit (at least it's shown in the schematics).

Is the motor fan actually connected to the climate control unit?
