Hello there.

I work here at the university in DD on a driving simulator. This needs to be integrated into a mock-up (design study) of a Mercedes-Benz W169.

'This design study looks cool, but the downside is that many parts are just mock-ups. The same goes for the instrument cluster. But that's not a problem, I've already bought one. Now, here's the question: The speed and tachometer displays in the current simulator use standard 0-5V analog signals (0V = minimum, 5V = maximum). However, the instrument cluster uses the CAN bus. So, I need an interface between the analog output of this control unit (which connects to the simulator's displays) and the input of the instrument cluster, so that I can see the speeds and RPMs on the instrument cluster when it's installed.' It shouldn't really be a problem with the CAN bus (at least, that's what it always seemed like in automotive mechatronics/electronics – the CAN bus always sounded very straightforward, especially compared to FlexRay).

I was thinking, for example, that in a real A-Class, you could simply read the signals from the bus (e.g., from the area near the instrument cluster) and then only modify the engine speed and vehicle speed. Based on the values that change (you would have to see what else theoretically changes on the bus and then try things out through trial and error), the arbitration numbers should become apparent. Then, you would need to be able to control the instrument cluster using a complete bus simulation, including the modified data from a control unit. Could this be achieved using the USB interface offered here?

Until today, I actually didn't believe it was possible, but after reading here in your forum about all the things that are already possible, I'm sure someone will have an idea on how to make it happen.

Thank you, and may you always have plenty of water beneath your keel!

Hello Ricky,

In principle, this should be possible. You can capture the CAN traffic and then replay it.
