Hallo Leute!

Ich bin der Maxx. (Markus) und komme aus Österreich.
I haven't been online for several months.
Back then, I had a Golf 5 GT and wanted to integrate a Webasto auxiliary heater into the CAN bus.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be too complicated for me.
Then, I also sold the Golf.
In between, I had a Passat 3BG, an Audi A3 8PA, and now I have another Golf V GTI Pirelli.
Today, I read something about a W-bus in the German VCDS forum.
That brought back memories of my CAN / W-bus project.
So, I decided to check if canhack.de still exists icon_smile.gif.

Yes, I'm back.
I don't have any projects currently that involve the CAN bus.

Regards,
MaxxThen, on top of that, I sold the Golf.

Hello Markus,

Last year, my auxiliary heater in my Audi A4 B6 broke down. Since August of this year, I've been researching the issue and looking for a solution to build a CAN-bus adapter that could control a Thermo Top C analogously, as I suspect it might be more difficult to install a Thermo Top V, which is supposed to already have CAN-bus functionality. Since I come from a completely different industry regarding bus systems, I haven't had much experience with CAN-bus technology so far. I would like to participate in your project. My control unit for the original heater still works, and if someone could help me, I might be able to read the control unit or the bus itself. However, I need to know what hardware I would require. Which Thermo Top model were you planning to install in your Golf? I've also considered the possibility of bypassing the control unit from my old heater and connecting all the sensors so that the control unit thinks everything is okay and releases the water pump output, which I could then use to control the Thermo Top.
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'LG' can be translated as 'Best regards' or 'Sincerely'. It is a common abbreviation for 'Liebe Grüße', which means 'Warm greetings' in English.

Jürgen.

Hello Jürgen,

ich wollte damals eine ThermoTop P in den Golf V CAN Integrieren.
Ziel wäre es gewesen, das Climatronicbedienteil entsprechend zu steuern.
The air vents, fan speed, and temperature should have been automatically adjusted.
The 'gateway' should have translated between the W-bus and CAN bus.

If there's a ThermoTop V that works with your A4, installation would be easier than building a gateway yourself.
I'm probably going to install a parking heater in my Golf next year, and I'll definitely use the appropriate ThermoTop V for the Golf V.
Due to lack of time, I probably won't build the gateway.

How did you envision controlling the ThermoTop C?
Via remote control, or do you have an instant heat button, or how does it work in the A4 B6?

Best regards,

Hello Markus,

In the B6, this is handled through the FIS (Flashing Information System). It sends the start command and everything the heater needs to the control unit via CAN bus. Then, I believe the control unit should report whether it's active or if there are any errors. Additionally, the control panel on the Climatronic activates. Since I don't know if the Thermo Top V installed in the A6 uses the same commands, and I already have a Thermo Top C here, I basically just need a gateway to convert it to analog signals. Audi wants 1200€ for that stupid heater, while the Thermo Top C is smaller, better, and cheaper. You can find the Thermo Top V at a reasonable price on **** for Golfs. You should check it out. Would you still be interested in such a project? I think there are enough people who had an original heater installed in their A4 back then and might be in the same situation as me now. Just use Google to see what's available about Ardic, a subsidiary of Eberspächer.

Best regards,

Jürgen.

Hello Jürgen,

Converter von CAN auf Analog gibts glaub ich nicht wirklich.
Sowas in der Art hätte dann mein Gateway auch gekonnt.
Basically, you don't necessarily need an analog solution.
What would be cool is a gateway between W-BUS and CAN, like the one I wanted to build.
In that case, communication would flow in both directions.
The guys have already identified the W-BUS components: <!-- m --><a class='postlink' href='http://libwbus.sourceforge.net'>http://libwbus.sourceforge.net</a><!-- m -->
I also basically have the CAN telegrams for the auxiliary heater at hand.
It mainly fails due to a lack of time.
I think people would be very interested in such a gateway.

Here you can read a bit about my project from back then.

Hello Markus,

'While the W-bus approach would be an interesting option, it would only work with Webasto systems. However, if someone chooses an Eberspächer system for any reason, it wouldn't function. Therefore, using an analog control method would be more practical. Perhaps we could also consider integrating a W-bus specifically for Webasto systems alongside the other features. What do you think? I've just ordered a CAN bus USB adapter to read the CAN signals from my A4 B6; it should arrive next week.'

Best regards,

Jürgen.

Jo, die Beiträge soll dann mal ein Mod oder der Admin trennen.
I would even go so far as to implement both the W-bus and the Eberspächer bus (if they use something like that).
You could then easily switch between them using a dip switch or jumper.

As I said, I'm interested, but I have very little time.

Best regards,
Markus. You could then conveniently switch it using a DIP switch or jumper.

As I said, I'd love to, but I hardly have any time.

I have separated the topics. You can continue the discussion about the auxiliary heater here: <!-- l --><a class='postlink-local' href='http://www.canhack.de/en/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=999&p=2790#p2790'>viewtopic.php?f=11&t=999&p=2790#p2790</a><!-- l -->

The purpose of the 'Introductions' forum is primarily for users to briefly introduce themselves and their projects. For more in-depth topics, we have dedicated subforums.
