Hello everyone in the forum,

After posting on the car PC forum, I was directed to you and hope you can help me further.

I have a Seat Ibiza 6L manufactured in June 2002.

I'm interested to know if this vehicle has OBD2 and whether it uses the CAN bus system. Perhaps someone even knows if my little Ibiza icon_biggrin.gif already has CAN Comfort?

Unfortunately, my online search has been unsuccessful so far. However, if my car supports it, I would appreciate a recommendation for a CAN to USB or serial adapter. I've already looked at the Fuchs website, and they have quite a few options. Once I have more specific information, I will place an order.

I've been interested in the topics of car PCs and OBD2 for a long time.
I hope you can help me so that I can slowly but surely start my car PC project (which is currently in the planning phase).

Greetings Schumi icon_biggrin.gif.

CAN ODB2 probably not icon_sad.gif.
Comfort CAN should be present icon_biggrin.gif.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'Cu' is a Spanish word that means 'with'. It can be used in a variety of contexts, such as:

* To express agreement or disagreement: 'Estoy de acuerdo con tu opinión.' (I agree with your opinion.)
* To indicate possession: 'Tengo un coche nuevo.' (I have a new car.)
* To describe a relationship: 'Soy amigo de Juan.' (I am friends with Juan.)
* To introduce a topic: 'Hablemos de política.' (Let's talk about politics.)

'Cu' can also be used as a preposition, meaning 'with'. For example, you could say 'Voy al cine con mi amiga.' (I'm going to the movies with my friend.)

In some cases, 'cu' can also be used as an adjective, meaning 'cute'. For example, you might say '¡Qué lindo!' (How cute!)

Hmm, so it seems like you're saying that a certain adapter from 'Fuchs' won't offer any benefits in terms of speed or performance, right?

I actually thought, or I believe I read somewhere, that since the year 2000, almost all vehicles have been equipped with OBD2.

Thank you for your reply.

Best regards, Schumi.

The problem with OBD data is that a control unit doesn't simply broadcast the data on the bus without being prompted.
If a connected tester needs specific data, it must request that data from the control unit. This means that a constant handshake must take place on the bus.
The next issue is that the OBD bus typically operates independently of all other buses. It cannot be assumed that all data available on the other buses can also be read from the OBD bus.
The entire OBD topic is standardized, including which data can be queried via the OBD bus. The next issue is whether the ECU actually provides all the data it could potentially provide, specifically regarding 'supported PIDs.'

If you consider a bus system like the Cockpit CAN with a monitor, you'll see that data is exchanged between control units such as the instrument cluster and the ECU. With a CAN monitor, I can simply read this data without having to send anything (in 'Listen Only' mode).
You just need to know which data is hidden behind each ID.

Hey, thanks for your excellent explanation... List mode would actually be enough for me to analyze the data.
You can gradually figure out what each individual ID represents.

Just to be clear... so, that adapter from Fuchs won't help me, right? I mean, the one that you plug into the OBD interface and then use with a laptop and a CAN monitor to analyze the data...
I can't receive any data on that topic because I would first need to send requests.

Ich muesste also das Innenraum CAN anzapfen icon_confused.gif hab gelesen das dies am Radio etc ankommt. Is that correct?

Thank you very much for the quick response.
Sure, I can help you with those questions as well.

'Schumi'

You will need a CAN interface or adapter regardless of whether you only want to read data or also write data.
Only for OBD CAN is it necessary to query the data from the ECU; it doesn't come out on its own.

The data on CAN bus systems like the engine and instrument cluster CAN is intended to keep the vehicle operational.
On the OBD CAN bus, the data serves for diagnostics in case of errors or limited operational capability. Therefore, generally fewer data are available or can be queried on the OBD CAN bus compared to all other CAN bus systems.

So, I would need to tap into the interior CAN bus. I read that it arrives at the radio, etc. Is that correct?
You need to decide which one you want to use; however, you might not be happy with using just an OBD CAN interface because it may not provide the data you're looking for.

It's also important to have a CAN interface that provides direct access to the CAN bus, such as the interfaces from Fuchs or the AVG4000 with the CAN option.
Then you can use something like the can tool to find out the PIDs.

By the way, your car should definitely have a CAN bus system, and using it in 'listen-only' mode poses no significant risk.

Thank you for all the answers; they were very helpful to me. icon_smile.gif
I also came across a nice website online, and I hope I can just share it without getting into trouble.

I requested a free information package from them; let's see what's included icon_biggrin.gif.

Best regards, Schumi.

What about the current model year? Are there any compatible adapters and software available for it?
