CAN hackers with their own hardware?

I have built my own CAN/USB adapter based on an ATmega microcontroller. I also want to develop the software for it entirely myself. I have tested the hardware myself, and it works (it emulates a USB interface as an RS232 port, which I can access using HTERM).
The USB <> ATMEGA <> CAN connection is working.

'Now, I would like to expand the adapter's software so that I can use the CAN Hack software. A simple, direct translation, essentially forwarding the CAN bus data directly to the emulated RS232 interface, doesn't seem to be sufficient.' The software reports that it cannot communicate with the adapter.

Is there a setting option for this in the CAN HACK software?
What protocol do you use between the software and your adapter? Can I expand my system in a way that will allow the software to run on it?

You need to implement the Lawicel protocol and then select the appropriate COM port interface in CAN-Hacker.
Then it will work.
