I have an original OBD2 cable with a DB9 female connector. Unfortunately, it only has pins 6 for CAN High (J-2284) and pin 14 for CAN Low (J-2284).

I would like to read out vehicle error codes. I was thinking that if I solder a USB cable with 4 wires to the correct pins, my homemade OBD2 adapter would work?

As far as I know, it needs to be from a USB drive:

Pin 1 VBUS: +5 VDC
Pin 2: D- Data.
Pin 3: D+ - Data Plus.
Pin 4 GND: Ground.

No.
CAN-Bus is completely different from USB.
What exactly is an "original OBD2 cable"?
Either you only have a connection cable for a specific diagnostic adapter (there are different pin configurations for OBD-2 to D-Sub 9), in which case the diagnostic adapter should be placed between the D-Sub connector and the USB plug.
Or a diagnostic adapter for the serial interface – the D-sub connector would also fit there, purely from a mechanical perspective.

Yes, I have an OBD connector cable with a 9 D-sub connector.
'I once took apart the OBD adapter and looked inside. I saw that only two wires are connected, specifically pins 6 and 14. As far as I understand, this isn't enough to read error codes. That's why I thought about simply using a USB cable with 4 wires and soldering it directly to the OBD adapter pins that I need for reading error codes. However, when I see pictures of the internal components of these OBD adapters online, I always see circuit boards and chips. So, I wanted to ask if it would work if I connect it directly to the pins of the OBD adapter using a USB cable.'

wenn -> if (in case)

which person

If it's already failing at that point, the best thing to do is buy a book about automotive diagnostics, get the right diagnostic software and hardware for the relevant, obviously highly secret vehicles, and also get a German dictionary (Duden).

The answer is: Try using your brain. The rest of the world uses electronics between USB and OBD2 connectors.

Not your cable.

How likely is it that the rest of the world consists of complete idiots who are mindlessly installing electronics?

Thank you, that's what I wanted to know icon_wink.gif, so I will order a regular OBD interface with USB. Can someone perhaps recommend a good one?
