Hey everyone,
I have a question: Which radios for the Golf 4 have CANbus compatibility and can display information on the FIS (multifunction display)?
I once looked at all the wiring diagrams for Gamma radios, and there was no mention of CAN bus. However, I know that Audi radios can display things like cassette or radio station names on the FIS (driver information system).
Sure, here's the translation:
'It's important to me that this is about CAN and not about another bus system.'
Best regards, Flo.

Okay, so Delta had access, but couldn't describe the FIS.
In the Volkswagen Golf IV, there was never an official radio/navigation system that transmitted FIS (Multi-Function Display) data via CAN (Controller Area Network), but only via 3LB (likely a specific wiring protocol).
'Only the Passat 3BG models had navigation systems, and those could only communicate with the RNS 846 and newer head units (although the Golf's RNS 846 can also do it!).'
greetings

Basically, there were/are two different ways to connect the radio/telematics components to the instrument cluster in Audi/VW vehicles.
In older models, this was done via a serial 3-wire bus, but in newer model years, it is now only possible via CAN.
The first combination instruments in Audi's Type 89 models could display radio frequencies on the FIS (driver information system) as early as the late 1980s. While CAN (Controller Area Network) had already been invented at that time, it was not yet a widely adopted standard.
If there are problems with retrofitting, it is usually due to an incorrect combination of a 3LB navigation system with a CAN control unit, or vice versa. In some cases, individual components can be replaced by disassembling the control unit.
Best regards, Mike.

Audi and VW are not interchangeable, and vice versa.

Yes, that was included in the brief explanation just now.

If we're already talking about it, Skoda and Seat should be compatible with VW.
to 3lb:
Once upon a time, there was an Audi with an approximate clock speed of 120 US clock cycles.
VW's new navigation systems have an approximate clock tick rate of 4 microseconds.
and VW radios with a 20us clock cycle.
Otherwise, the protocol specifications are the same! (VW cars from around 1997 onwards can use both 4US and 20US timings.)
and finally, regarding the 'can' function.
In mj 2003-04, TP 1.6 was introduced, starting from 04, TP 2.0 (TP stands for Transport Protocol, and it can be roughly compared to TCP/IP for Ethernet; TP is for CAN, but this is a very rough analogy to help you understand).
Audi also uses a protocol, but it's structured very differently from TP 1.6/2.0, although I can't recall the exact name right now.
None of these protocols are compatible with each other.

The underlying motive...
'To communicate with a VW FIS (from an 846 speedometer) via CAN, I need a 'sender or activator' that communicates with the fewest possible IDs.'
I once tried to log data from an Audi Navigation Plus system, but there were simply too many messages!
So, what do you think I should use to find out the IDs?
Does anyone have a log of a data channel initialization?
Greetings.
