How the individual control units function and how to perform firmware updates on control units is described, but the use of 'seed & keys' is not mentioned or explained.

That would probably be too specific to the manufacturer for the book. However, chapter 5.1.2 does indeed cover seed and key exchange. The process of exchanging information is generally explained, but then it refers to the manufacturer (the lengths of the seed and key values, and the calculation algorithms used, are not part of KWP2000).

I now have the book as well. It's an interesting read, and the €40 was worth it, but I'm missing a chapter, which is kwp1281 (no, ISO 9141-2 is not kwp1281). Also, it would have been nice to have more VW-specific content and ready-made source code examples. icon_biggrin.gif But you can't have everything.

Did you receive my email, @frogger?

kwp1281? Is that a very recent protocol or an older one? I think UDS will eventually replace KWP2000 in new vehicles.

P.S.: Email sent.

kwp1281 is the protocol used by most Golf 4 engine control units (ECUs) for diagnostics via K-line.

As far as I know, the latest Audi models already have UDS (Unified Diagnostic Services) integrated. There's also a beta version of VAGCOM that supports these features.
