Hello!

Does anyone know how to wake up the CAN bus via the OBD connector?

Current situation: The car is locked, and the CAN bus is in sleep mode - CAN bus OFF. Now, I want to wake up the CAN bus and send messages via the OBD connector, for example, to read the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), etc.

I found a similar discussion in a post from 2013, but there was no definitive information.
In sleep mode, there should be 11V on pin 14 (CAN-Low). Then, connect pin 14 to ground, and the CAN bus should be activated.

Can anyone confirm this, and does it also work for a BMW 5 Series (F10)?

Any other ideas?

Answers are very welcome! icon_smile.gif

BMW uses OSEK for network management, and in that system, the bus line is not grounded; instead, the transceiver is turned off.

To wake up an OSEK ring, you need either an active WakeUp (class 15) or a passive one (wake-up via CAN).

Passive wake-up is described in the OSEK NM specification.

Thank you for the detailed explanation!

Unfortunately, I don't have the OSEK Spec, and it might not even be necessary if you can still answer the two questions for me.

A) Is it possible to achieve an active wake-up function via the OBD interface, for example, by activating terminal 15 through a request to the gateway or another control unit? (Address 0x130, as I understand it, displays the terminal status via the OBD connector.)

B) Is it possible to achieve a passive wake-up function via the OBD interface?

--> I only want to use the pins on the OBD connector and avoid connecting to any CAN lines or ECU connectors!

Thank you and best regards!
