Hello,
I installed an RNS-E from a 2011 Audi A3 into an Audi A2. The Audi A2 previously had an RNS-D, so it already had the CAN bus connected to the radio.
The RNS-E system works without problems in the Audi A2 when coded for an A4. However, the device does not read the speed signal from the CAN bus. This means that navigation does not function correctly in tunnels.
Could it be that the CAN protocol used in the A2 is different from the one used in the A3?
If that's the case, could the CAN protocol be converted from the A2 to the protocol of the A3? Doesn't something like that exist with Volkswagen, for example, when changing from a 1.6 engine to a 2.0 or vice versa?
My knowledge of the CAN bus is very limited. I hope you can help me.
Please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will then give you only the translation, without any explanations.

Hello,
You could check if the RNS-E recognizes the speed when you connect it to the bus using your CAN adapter.
You need to figure out which message the bus needs to send so that the RNS-E can detect the speed.
If possible, the only difficulty would be a small microcontroller that converts the A2 speed message into the format understood by the RNS-E and transmits it to the infotainment CAN bus.
Actually, I thought there wouldn't be any difference in the CAN messages.
Best regards, Rainer.
PS: Hopefully, there's already a ready-made adapter available for car radios in the 2011 A3.

Hello,
With enough time and ingenuity, such an adapter could certainly be built. However, it's probably easier to simply buy an adapter that is designed for installing an RNS-E in vehicles without a CAN bus system.
Just do a Google search for "RNS-E CAN adapter."
Greetings.
Jens.

The adapter is already finished.
Only the ID of the speed signal has been changed.
What I'm wondering is: Does an Audi A2 from the year 2002 already support CAN TP 2.0?
I was quite surprised when a 2010 or 2011 RNS-E unit worked without any problems in the old A2.

I can hardly imagine that.

More likely the opposite – there might still be radios/navigation systems in 2010 that run on version 1.6.
Where did the RNS go?
I had researched something else for a different reason once.
Code: | Modell TP Gateway MJ
---------------------------------------------------------------
Polo 9N3 TP1.6 6Q0 959 433 X XXX -2009
Polo 6R TP2.0 Im Bordnetz-SG integriert 2010-
T5.1 TP1.6 7H0 959 433 B XXX -2009
(T5.2 TP2.0 7H0 959 433 B XXX 2010)
T5.2 TP2.0 Im Bordnetz-SG integriert 2010- |
The 2010 T5 mentioned in parentheses may be a phantom part – the fun stops when ordering parts with a 1+3 digit part number suffix and requiring the chassis number for the order.
Best regards,
Ingo

Hello,
'The RNS-E unit, with the last three digits being 192, works fine in my Audi A3 8L (model 2003, manufactured in 2002) and is coded for an A6 with a V signal.'
I'm also considering retrofitting an RNS-E 'Media' system, specifically models from 2010 onwards with the ending number 193.
I'm also experiencing the issue where the speed signal is not being received via CAN bus.
Is there a solution?
P.S. As a test, I tried the 'old' RNS-E 192 with the A4 coding.
FIS (Fahrzeuginformationssystem), key illumination, and power on/off via ignition were working, but the speed display was not functioning (purely satellite-based navigation).

Well, there's always a solution.
But as long as none of the usual suspects see a market for it, you won't be able to buy anything ready-made.
I don't know if you want to or are able to do any crafting yourself.
Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with your Audi – are you sure that the speed information isn't available on your powertrain CAN bus?
I could also imagine that the gateway is simply not mirroring data to the infotainment CAN bus.
Best regards,
Ingo

Hello Ingo,
My car originally came with a genuine Audi Chorus 2 radio installed from the factory. This radio had a GALA function that was supposed to work via CAN-bus High and CAN-bus Low (according to the logic, the vehicle should have 'speed information' available through the CAN-bus).
When upgrading to the RNS-E system, I was puzzled as to why an 'analog V-signal' is additionally required, when the factory radio (Chorus 2) receives this information via CAN bus.
Theoretically, either the Nie GALA system or the RNS-E (whether it's the 192 or 193 version) isn't 'understanding' the signal. Is that even possible? The FIS [Fahrzeuginformationssystem], MFL [Multifunktionslenkrad], and lighting are working, but the speedometer is not?
I understand that there are always solutions (just like with elections), but this shouldn't be solved by changing vehicles .
Initially, I received statements like 'it won't work' and 'there is no solution.' With the understanding that I am not the only one who needs this (for A2, A3, A6 screws), and after a lot of searching, I have now reached the point where I believe it is 'possible.' The question is, at what price?
Regarding work, I'm not afraid of it. Most of the time, I achieve my goals. However, along the way, I often use phrases like 'now things are getting expensive,' 'I wish I hadn't...' or 'this is going to be costly.' Afterwards, I comfort myself with thoughts like 'you learn from your mistakes' or 'next time I'll do it right,' etc.
Let's assume there's a data representation problem on the infotainment CAN bus. What could be done about it?
Regards,
Michael.
P.S. My vehicle has the TP1.6 CAN interface.

Since I created this thread, I just wanted to let everyone know that things haven't fallen by the wayside, and I'm still actively working on it.
I now know the following:
Similar to Volkswagen, Audi switched from CAN 1.6 to CAN 2.0 at a certain point in time.
The following Audi models are affected by the upgrade to the RNSE-E 2010: the Audi A2, A3, and A6.
You can find several people online who have experienced the same problem with their VW T5 when upgrading to the RNS 510 system.
Bei denen hat sich die Firma CANSHACK der Problematik angenommen und einen Adapter gebaut, welchen man dort auch kaufen kann. To be found here:
http://www.canshack.de/german/volkswagen-zubehor-und-can-adapter/volkswagen-t5-transporter-caravelle-multivan-california-2003-2009/can-adaptor-tp1-6-tp-2-0-rns-510-retrofit-nachruesten-with-navigation-arrows-pfeile-in-mfa-mfd-fis-cluster.html
I have contacted the company and am in contact with their support representative to develop a solution.
When I have news, I will share it here immediately.

Hello.
They have now solved the problem there.
I recently visited him, and after an hour of logging and programming, it started working.
What was surprising:
I had 4 identical RNS-E units with me.
All with the same part number.
Out of the 3 devices, everything works perfectly fine. However, on one device, the arrows in the AI are displayed as fragmented pieces.
I am now hoping for a defect in the device.
But otherwise, I can only recommend this place.
The guy was really nice and clearly knew what he was doing.
It then immediately transferred the finished software to four CAN adapters, which are now connected in front of the radio.
He had all the cables and connectors he needed.
He then gave me a very good price for the four CAN devices, and I went home feeling lucky.
This company seems to be located near Wolfsburg.
The technician lives near Freising, in the Munich area.
You can find his phone number here: under 'Support / Technical Support.'

It was very interesting to see all the things he did with his VW bus, especially from a purely technical (CAN bus) perspective.
