Concerns of a newcomer

Hi everyone, I've realized that my car also has a CAN bus. Sure, I'd like to try that too.
I'm reading everywhere now that sending data to the CAN bus can potentially cause damage. Is there a tool that can only read data, so that I can eliminate this risk? Are there any preventative measures that can be taken to prevent something like this from happening?

I'll probably be getting a CAN bus system soon, and I'm already having my own thoughts about it.

- Listen Only Mode

In 'listen only' mode, the adapter does not send an acknowledgment. Furthermore, incorrect baud rate settings do not cause errors.
This makes simply listening in on the bus less risky.
