Hi, I'm in the process of installing a CarPC. As far as I know, my Mercedes W203 also has a CAN bus installed. If I follow all the posts here, I should also have an 'interior' and an 'engine compartment' CAN bus.

Okay, here's my question: Since I'm completely new to this topic, is it possible to control the computer using the steering wheel buttons?

Okay, so first, volume up/down and next/previous for MP3 files?

Sure, here's the translation:

'Maybe I should also write some messages for the AI, like song titles, etc.'

What do I need to get started very slowly? The PC isn't in the car yet, but I could certainly test it out using my laptop.

Well, theoretically it's possible... but that would require being able to query your LFB buttons via the CAN bus. You would likely also need to implement cPOS in order to be able to utilize it.

Hi,

I believe the LFB (likely referring to specific buttons or functions) operate over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus, because they have different functions in different menus, and everything seems to work together. So, everything is totally interconnected; the command system (radio/navigation), the climate control, and the speedometer, among other things, all run through the bus system.

Do I need this module for that?

Thank you for the response.

Hi, here's another question.

How do I connect the CAN-USB adapter to my CAN bus? I don't have an RS323 interface anywhere. Do I need to build something myself, or are there adapters available?

What's connected to the CAN interface isn't a serial port; it's a SUB-D connector, which is the standard connection for the CAN bus.

You'll need to do a little bit of wiring; simply connect the two CAN bus cables to a Sub-D connector, and the pinout is specified in the instructions.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'Cu' is a Spanish word that means 'with'. It is often used in greetings and farewells. For example, you might say 'Hola, cu' to someone you are greeting, or 'Adios, cu' to someone you are saying goodbye to.

'Cu' can also be used as a verb, meaning 'to be with'. For example, you might say 'Estoy con mi familia' to mean 'I am with my family'.

In some cases, 'cu' can also be used as a noun, meaning 'a companion'. For example, you might say 'Ella es mi cu' to mean 'She is my companion'.

I hope this helps!

Oh, SUB-D, I wasn't paying that close attention icon_wink.gif.

Okay, I'll try to figure out which cables in my setup are connected to the CAN bus.

In the W203, located above the cover beneath the dashboard on the driver's side (where the OBD diagnostic port is located), there is also a small distribution block for the interior CAN bus.

You can easily tap into the CANBUS either using the appropriate connector (available in various MB wiring harnesses) or directly at the cable (brown, brown/red).

For the MFL (multifunction steering wheel), the instrument cluster serves as the gateway. In older vehicles, the MFL is still connected analogously, while more recent models now use the more cost-effective LIN bus to control the steering wheel buttons. In this case as well, AI serves as the gateway.

Best regards, Mike.
