The signal is likely coming from the body control module, but I can't be absolutely certain.

In the B6 model, this information is sent as part of the speed message, with ID 351, where byte 1 indicates direction: 00 = forward, 02 = reverse. However, the R8 is more similar to the A3 8P or TT MKII, and these models can differ significantly from the A4 B6 or A6 C5. But it might still be found on ID 351.
