Hello, dear Canhack community,

For a project aimed at developing an efficient and intelligent speed camera detection system, I would like to extract the allowed speed that my BMW F11 and i8 vehicles already display in the instrument cluster and HUD, so that I can further process this value.
The information regarding the F11 seems to be located at the PT Can. I haven't looked into the i8 yet, but it's probably similar.
Has anyone looked into this topic before?
It would be great to have the CAN ID for this information.
If not, what software would be suitable for tracking down the ID?
So far, I've only worked with the KCANMonitor and some projects using my own microcontrollers, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Hello,

I would investigate where the car is getting the "allowed speed" information from, such as image recognition of traffic signs, GPS position, or something else.
After that, enable the "Message-Changes View" in KCANMonitor and fake the speed information. Would a cardboard speed display placed in front of the camera work?

Best regards, Rainer.

I've also had the idea about using cardboard traffic signs.
It would be useful to have a filter function that excludes anything that has already changed before the paper symbols come into play.
I don't think the K-Kan Monitor has that feature...

To my knowledge, the data from the sign recognition system is stored on the FlexRay bus, not on the CAN bus. At least, at BMW, the sign recognition feature is only available in conjunction with the lane keeping assist system. And the camera is attached to the Flexray (branch 7).

Interesting, because the instrument cluster can also display this information, and since it's only connected via the CAN bus, how else would it receive that information?

Here is the pinout diagram for the I8 combination instrument.
These are, incidentally, publicly available pieces of information.
