For the A3 8P, there's a good way to access the CAN bus lines, specifically the gateway.

It is located on the right side, next to the steering column, in the lower area.
I bought a similar gateway on **** for 8€ just to get the connectors (you can't buy all of them individually from Audi). The connector from the donor gateway was desoldered. 20 wires were crimped, and short pigtails with 2-pin connectors were attached to each.
The adapter cable is then connected between the original wiring harness and the gateway.
It requires no soldering, cutting, or crimping on the vehicle and is fully reversible.

The donor gateway contains useful components (transceivers, transformers, voltage regulators, etc.) that can be desoldered and used for your own projects.
