Hi!

Unfortunately, this is not limited to a specific ID.
Generally speaking, that would be 0x664 (which is also mentioned further up on this page).
BUT
In order for all other components in your car to recognize the radio as a radio, it must connect to the CAN bus network.
To understand it, you should temporarily reinstall the old Audi radio, start your logger, and take a look at the area from address 0x400 to 0x43F.
In this area, all the control units communicate with each other.
Your radio is address 0x439, a navigation system would be 0x436, the phone is 0x43A, the BNSTG or BCM is 0x408, and so on.

If your device is not registered within this network, the other participants will not accept it.

The structure of the ring is easy to understand when you see the data on the monitor, but very difficult to explain.

The principle:
You unlock your car.
All in-cabin control units are powering on.
All control units send a (actually two) 'I am here' message on the CAN bus.
These messages will be read by all other participants.
Now, each participant knows what other components are installed.
Now, the control unit with the lowest ID (usually the Body Control Module with 0x408) initiates communication by calling the participant with the next highest ID.
and so on...

It looks like this: (All messages are 6 to 8 bytes long, but I will only write the first byte here).

0x408: 0x36 ... (BCM calls Navigation)
0x436: 0x3A ... (Navigation system calls the phone)
0x43A: 0x08 ... (The phone has the highest ID in the system and is now requesting the lowest ID again.)
and so on, and so forth.

Warning!!!
At VW (and potentially also at Audi), a value of 0x20 is subtracted from the value in the first byte if that value is greater than 0x30.
So, 0x3A then becomes 0x1A.

Please pay attention to this and therefore please test and record the results using the actual radio.

By the way, this ring is also the reason why almost no one manages to contribute anything to the MFA (presumably referring to a specific organization or platform).
You need to have the control unit you want to use to write data to the MFA registered within the network. Otherwise, the MFA will not allow it.
This applies to the MFAs that are addressed in versions TP 2.0 and TP 1.6.

Greetings to you all.

Thank you for the detailed and helpful explanation.
I have successfully managed to connect to the ring and write data to the FIS using an AT90CAN microcontroller. In this process, I am using the ID of the radio, meaning the radio itself is not physically connected.

When using the A3 with the radio and phone system (FSE) connected normally, both the radio and the FSE display information on the FIS (multi-function instrument cluster), with the FSE taking priority.

Is it possible to use an unused ID for my circuit in addition to the radio and head unit (FSE), and write data to the FIS using that ID, or are only those two devices fundamentally allowed to do so?

Hi Gerd.

That's actually very simple with Audi...
Take the telematics ID... Of course, only if telematics is NOT installed.

I'm coming from the Volkswagen side of things, and there, these components are allowed to write data to the MFA (FIS).
- Radio
- Navigation
- Phone
- Telematics
- DSP amplifier
I can't say whether that's the case with Audi... but the telematics system is definitely allowed to do that.
The telematics ID (for Volkswagen) is 0x43D.

The telematics system writes data to the entire MFA (Multi-Function Assembly), both the upper and lower sections.
At Audi, if I remember correctly, things were really strange when it came to describing the upper and lower sections.

The upper section was described using only 2 identifiers in plain text, while the lower section was described using Tp1.6 or 2.0.

I don't remember that completely anymore... it was a long time ago.

Best regards and good luck.

It's been a while, but I now have time to work on this project again.

Did the Audi A3 8P ever have telematics features?
"If so, does anyone know the IDs for the control unit for ring registration and the IDs for the top two rows?"

I have set the factor to 0.5 and the offset to -49.5, which works best for me with a start bit of 56 and a length of 8.
Start bit 40, length 7: Fuel level factor 1 minute, maximum value 127.
From 0 to 20 is the mileage.

Best regards, Ulli.

I'd also like to contribute. I've built a CAN simulator for my VW RCD320 radio. Everything works great with the CAN interface, but unfortunately, I'm missing the IDs for the radio itself.

Ignition plus.
Light.
Possibly a steering wheel remote control.

I had already found some codes.

For example, the ignition plus signal should have the ID '0x575 01 00 00 00', and the data is being sent and received on the CAN bus, but the radio still turns off after an hour. The same thing happens with the light signal; unfortunately, the radio remains dark. The ID I found for that signal is 0x635.

Or is the internal CAN bus already assigned to other IDs?

DIY enthusiast.

The sun is shining brightly and warmly. The birds are chirping happily in the trees. A gentle breeze is blowing through the grass. It's a beautiful day.

1 + 2 :
A4 1D = LSB MSB = 7588 km Total.

6 + 7:
6-bit data: 8 represents on/off in one-second intervals.
The six least significant bits always increment.
7 ranges from 00 to 1D (0 to 29).

Example 1: 7E A4 1D 60 C8 E8 A8 03 14:20 17.09.2006
Example 2: 7E A4 1D 60 C8 E8 AA 05 14:21 17.09.2006
Example 3: 7E A4 1D 60 C8 E8 BE 03 14:31 17.09.2006

65D
3 + 2 + 1 = km
Here's an example from my side:
1 = ED
2 = 2F
3 = 4
42FED is 274,413 kilometers.
