Hello!

Perhaps someone here can help me.

I have my old 4F instrument cluster and gateway set up on the table.

I can also communicate with the vehicle using VCDS (gateway, speedometer), everything is possible. My problem is that I don't have any illumination for the speedometer display, meaning the mileage, time, fuel gauge, and warning lights are all dark.

I have connected all the wires except for terminals 58s and 58d on the speedometer.

Can someone give me a tip about what I'm missing?

Thank you very much.

Chris.

Check lamps? So not just a light control?
I suspect that in the 4F models, some sensors are directly connected to the instrument cluster – which would likely result in "too many" warning lights being illuminated.

Size 58 perhaps? X

Initially, everything on the 58 is equipped with fixed headlights.
I think "58s" and "58d" probably refer to something related to the brightness control in Audi vehicles.

Best regards,
Ingo

No, not a single lamp is lit.

When I use the VCDS actuator diagnostic function, everything works on the speedometer.

Could it be that the CAN bus needs to send a signal equivalent to terminal 15 to the instrument cluster in order for it to power on?

According to the wiring diagram I'm looking at, everything seems to originate from the ignition switch and goes to the access and start control unit.

Hello,
Okay, so basically it's possible that the instrument cluster still wants to receive a signal via the CAN bus. Does the instrument cluster no longer have a direct connection for terminal 15?
Do you also see nothing while accessing it with VCDS? If that's the case, then the bus is definitely not sleeping.

Greetings.

No, even when I access the system with VCDS, I don't see anything. When I connect the speedometer to the battery, all the needles move up about 2mm and then remain in that position.

Here is the pinout of the speedometer.

2 - not applicable / not available / not specified.
3 - CAN bus line low (to the diagnostic interface for data bus J533).
4 - CAN bus line high (to the diagnostic interface for data bus J533).

Well, you'll probably have to accelerate to around 15 km/h for the speedometer to start working.
Many speedometers can also be activated via the diagnostic interface (gateway) or the body control module (depending on the model) using the wake-up line. However, connecting to terminal 15 is definitely simpler when setting up a test bench.

Best regards,
Ingo

Hello!

Unfortunately, there is no change when measuring the voltage on the Wakeup line; it's still showing 12V.

Could it be that I need a CAN bus emulator that sends a KL.15 signal to the CAN bus, which would activate the instrument cluster?

Could someone possibly recommend a good emulator to me?

Hello,
"As far as I know, the AI module in the A6 is connected to the display CAN bus along with the diagnostic interface/gateway. If I'm not mistaken, the gateway also has the signal from terminal 15 on pin 16."
You can find gateways quite cheaply on **** , so you might want to try getting one to wake up the AI gateway.

Greetings.
Jens.

Hello!

I wanted to give some feedback on the solution.

To get the speedometer working, I had to integrate the following components.

EZS (Electronic Ignition System), key with ignition switch, body control module, gateway, and speedometer.

I don't know much about the CAN bus itself, but I would like to learn more about it icon_smile.gif.

If I order the CANHACK diagnostic interface now, where exactly do I need to connect it to intercept the CAN bus signal that powers the tachometer? Presumably in the CAN bus instrument cluster?

Best regards.

Chris.

Hallo Chris,

ja, musstest Du die "28- Weckleitung (zum Diagnose-Interface für Datenbus J533)" auch anschliessen?

Hello!

Yes, I also connected it, but simply connecting the wake-up line from the combination instrument to the gateway doesn't work without the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The speedometer won't activate that way. Even applying 12V to the wake-up line unfortunately doesn't do anything.

Can the VCDS interface be used with the can tool software by purchasing an additional license?

Leider nein, daher habe ich meine eigene Hardwareplattform gebaut:

Ich schreibe Dir dazu noch eine PN.
