CAN Bus: With or Without Potential?

Hello,

In a two-wire CAN bus system in a vehicle, the bit signal is transmitted differentially.

Both levels, Hi and Lo, always refer to a common potential, for example, 2.5V in the dominant level. In the recessive level, Hi goes to 3.5V and Lo goes to 1.5V.

Is a common potential actually required?

Is the difference in signal levels sufficient for bit transmission?

zur Übertragung reicht die Differenz, also CAN-High und CAN-Low aus. Da bei zu großen Potentialunterschieden irgendwann die Treiberbausteine aufgeben, sollten diese vermieden werden. Also bitte keine Masseschleifen mit Schrott-Laptopnetzteilen am Bordnetz oder noch schlimmer, Schrottnetzteilen (ohne galvanische Trennung) an 230V, KFZ und Rechner etc.
