Hello,
Perhaps someone has a tip. For a gateway that converts CAN to CAN, I'm looking for a controller that has two CAN interfaces. Otherwise, minimal requirements are sufficient.
Since we're already on the topic: Does anyone have recommendations for CAN controllers (even with only one CAN port)? I particularly value good programmability, meaning an easy-to-use programmer or ISP, and a C compiler that is as freely available as possible.
Best regards,
Jens.

Okay, for a standalone CAN controller, there's the PIC microcontroller, which is also used in the CANhack adapter available here. However, I personally would use an Atmel microcontroller with an SPI interface in conjunction with an MCP2515.
You can connect two MCP2515 chips to an Arduino and create a gateway.
For the Atmel AVR, there's the free PIC, and for the Atmel chips, of course.
Here's a good link on the topic: http://www.kreatives-chaos.com/artikel/can

Thank you! That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for, and it will help me.

No, you're not curious at all, you just want to know everything!
I want to avoid directly patching the engine control unit (ECU) and, to do that, I need to connect it to the CAN bus through an intermediary filter. The gateway should be placed between the ECU and the CAN bus, intercepting and modifying certain messages, as well as sending specific messages, all on the engine CAN bus.
'But there's no rush; first, I need to install a proper tap point for the motor-CAN and write the corresponding software for the laptop. The latter is already in progress, while the former is waiting for better (at least drier!) weather, which should ideally be this weekend.'
I hope I have satisfied your curiosity .
Best regards,
Jens.

But my curiosity is not yet satisfied .
What are you doing in the motor CAN?
What are you up to?
Best regards.

I certainly won't make that public, so that others can profit from it.
And just to be silly: What shouldn't I connect to the engine CAN? Also, what should I connect to the interior CAN? I find that much less interesting, especially since not much happens there. It's basically disconnected in half an hour, and the appeal disappears when everything starts malfunctioning and dancing around on the laptops.
Best regards,
Jens.

I understand that you won't be broadcasting this to the public .
The question of what you are doing with the motor-CAN was not a prohibition .

... using just a simple serial CAN controller, you definitely won't be happy with a 500k baud rate on the motor-CAN bus, and having only one port for two buses will certainly make real-time operation impossible.
Take a HCS12 controller from Freescale, which is available with 64k, 128k, 256k, and 512k of memory. The smaller versions have 2x CAN interfaces, while the larger versions can have up to 5x CAN interfaces.
Then, you would also need a controller that is suitable for automotive applications due to its extended temperature range.
As a development platform, the ICC12 is a cost-effective and well-suited option for the HCS12.
If you don't need quite as much performance and memory, a good AT90CAN-based microcontroller from Atmel, combined with the ICCAVR compiler, will also work well.
Best regards,
Mike.

Hello Mike,
with
You are absolutely right about your objection. While I only need to intercept a single message, I have to filter the entire data stream to do so. Furthermore, the application is timing-critical and security-relevant.
Your tip about the HCS12 controllers is great. They're a bit too expensive for the planned project, but they would be useful for a personal gaming board.
Thank you very much, and best regards.
Jens.

Does anyone know if the AT90CAN* is also available as DIP packages? I'm not very good at SMD soldering.

Hi candev.
gibt es da mittlerweile was neues?
I've been doing something similar for a while now. I'd be interested to know .
Sure, here's the translation:
'lg' is a German abbreviation that stands for 'liebe Grüße,' which means 'best regards' or 'warm greetings.' It's commonly used in emails, letters, and other forms of communication to express affection or goodwill.

Hi, still nothing new?
What if I have a chip with 2 CAN controllers, 2 transceivers on the board, and a power supply? What else would be needed? And would I need to make any significant adjustments to the transceivers (either in hardware or software)?
Simply put,
