Post05-04-2018, 17:12    Subject: Opel Astra G CID Troubleshooting Guide Quote

Hello everyone,

Let me briefly introduce myself:

My name is Martin, I am 46 years old, and I am from Bayreuth, Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

I work as an electrician, and my hobbies include microcontrollers, technology in general, computers, and creating short films for personal use (on various topics). Occasionally, I also design and etch circuit boards.

I'm not a particularly skilled programmer, but I've done some small projects. I've dabbled in Python, Bascom, and C.
My hardware: Raspberry Pi 2 and 3, Arduino UNO, Mega 2650, and Teensy 2.0.

CAN-BUS: PiCan2 CAN-Bus board for Raspberry Pi, SparkFun CAN-Bus board for Arduino, and 2 x MCP2515/TJA1050 modules for Arduino and Raspberry Pi, available on **** .
I have modified the MCP2515/TJA1050 with a 16MHz crystal and created a module with separate traces for the MCP2515, providing both 3.3V and 5V power options.
the TJA1050.

Sniffing CAN bus traffic (and optionally creating log files) using a Raspberry Pi (with Can-utils and Wireshark) and an Arduino.
I also modified the Arduino CAN library as shavenne recommended.

I also own an Opel Astra G (year 2002) station wagon. A few years ago, I had the original NCDR1500 navigation radio with a CDC03 (CD changer) and telematics (Nokia/car phone).
and of course, I upgraded the CID (color display). I also installed an (RGB) switching board in the CID (from Hardwarekiller) for the reverse camera.

A few years ago, I also bought a CID and an NCDR2011 from **** at a spot price, I believe, for experimenting. Unfortunately, these devices are "locked" (or "disabled").
Display Safe and Radio Safe. And without a radio code/PIN.

@shavenneViewing profile: shavenne:
Is it possible that the "Display Safe" feature is preventing me from turning it on via CAN bus (only the Opel logo with the date and time is displayed)?
Is the radio connected to the CAN bus? If so, the display turns on as soon as I turn on the radio. Of course, then the display and radio both show "Safe" status.
I probably need to send multiple CAN messages in sequence for the display to turn on.
Do I need a gateway?
Can you please help me out, maybe with some code snippets?

The easiest thing to do would be to just leave it and buy a new car stereo with DAB+ etc. and get rid of the NCDR thing. I think I read somewhere that there aren't any more navigation CDs anyway. But I still want to learn a little more...

Okay, that's all for now.

Have a good evening.

Martin.

As I mentioned in a previous post here: You need to display some text on the screen, otherwise you'll get stuck on the Opel logo.

You can find the corresponding messages at IDs 0x348 and 0x759.

Hello shavenne,

"In the meantime, I've managed to get the display to turn on without the radio (with the CAN bus disconnected) using a dump (CANplayer -I .....log). I'll examine the log in detail tomorrow and report back."

Still, I'm happy that I've come this far.

Have a good evening.

Martin.

I'm making slow progress. Here's a quick update.
Thank you again to shavenne for your help and preliminary work.
See you soon - Martin
