I plan to inject CAN bus messages for the GAR (Gearshift Actuator Retrofit) buttons into the interior bus in order to retrofit a GRA (Gear Retraction Assist) system without using the MFL (Multi-Function Lever). Do you think this is likely to be successful, and does anyone know the coding for these messages?

The GRA button should be located on the steering wheel. I would personally avoid using it, as imagine if your computer (or whatever device controls it) freezes and continuously sends the GRA signal, meaning your car would constantly accelerate.

Gray (referring to the color gray) has no place inside a car's interior. For example, in the G4, some buttons are still directly connected to the engine control unit, while in the G5, I believe they are only connected via the CAN bus system.

'But shouldn't gray be a standard feature on such an expensive car like this one?'

g'RA has nothing to do with the interior CAN bus. In the G4, for example, the buttons are still hard-wired to the engine control unit, and in the G5, I believe they are only connected to the motor CAN.

But shouldn't RA be standard equipment in a car as expensive as this?
The Touareg is a special model in the price range of a fully equipped Passat. No further configuration changes were possible, and the only thing missing is the GRA (Radio Navigation Audio). This is controlled by the MFL (Multi-Function Leather steering wheel), whose buttons are connected to the same control unit as the radio and telephone controls, and as far as I know, they are connected to the interior CAN bus. The commands then presumably reach the engine control unit via the CAN gateway. If the button is broken and makes a '+ ' sound every time you hit a bump in the cobblestones, I can still disable the entire GRA with the brake.'en.'But shouldn't something like }GRA} be standard on a car as expensive as this one?'

If the button is broken and makes a 'plus' sound every time you hit a bump on cobblestones, I can still disable the entire GRA system using the brake pedal.

Okay, I'll just speak for the Golf IV: there was also a control unit for the MFL (multifunction leather steering wheel). However, it only had buttons for the radio and/or phone. The rest was hardwired.

Does your car have TP 1.6 or already TP 2.0? My local dealer might let me look at the CAN documentation for KomfortCAN. If so, I'll extract that information and send it to you.

also ich sprech jetzt mal einfach für golf iv: da gab es auch ein steuergerät für das mfl. da waren aber auch nur die tasten für radio und/oder telefon drauf. der rest hardt verdrahted.

waDoes your car have TP 1.6 or already TP 2.0? My dealer might want to show me the CAN documentation for KomfortCAN. Then I'll write that information down for you.

Unfortunately, I don't know that yet, as I haven't received the car. It will be built in week 47. Where can one find these specifications (VW TP 1.6 or 2.0)? If I know something specific, I'll let you know. My friend said I could browse through it, but unfortunately, I'm not allowed to make copies.

LOL.

'If a washing machine has these specifications, I'll be laughing my head off – never!'
^^

What do you even want with TP 2.0 or 1.6 here? MFL/GRA is a broadcast message and has nothing to do with TP...

Best regards,
Sven.

What exactly is 'TP'? I thought it referred to all the messages circulating within VW (Volkswagen).

I'm also curious to see what happens. If I'm allowed to be there, I'll bring a good camera phone to take some pictures.

was ist den die tp genau? ich dachte das sind alle messages die im vw rumschwieren?

I'm also curious to see what happens. If I'm allowed to be there, I'll bring a good camera phone to take copies of things.

TP is the transport protocol that enables data exchange between control units. The content of the data is not described here, but only how the data channels are opened, etc. The IDs are specific and not the same for all cars icon_sad.gif.

As far as I know, there is no information available from Volkswagen, and certainly no specifications icon_sad.gif. Therefore, reverse engineering is necessary icon_wink.gif.

Sven.
